Everybody has heroes and people they admire. We want to emulate successful people. English students want to be like English native speakers.
In my opinion, as an English teacher, here are some great role models for your English.
Hugh Grant
Brilliant use of fillers and pausing devices. He’s also very indirect in talking about important things, which is very British.
Julie Andrews
Not only can she sing but she has a remarkable speaking voice, too. The main thing I like about Julie Andrews is that she has the best eye contact of any Hollywood star. She doesn’t stare but nor does she merely glance at Omar Sharif. This is about the right level of eye contact.
Hopefully you’ll have a chance to use your English in such romantic settings, but even if that’s not the case you should still try to pause, maintain eye contact, use fillers and be indirect at times.
